Changing a channel can be risky, but it’s not unusual. This blog used to be called Thoughts and Deeds, because, well, that was what it was about.
Then I changed it to my name, Yvette Walker, because it made sense and my name is my brand.
But when I created a faith and values podcast called Positively Joy, available on all platforms (yes, it’s a totally shameless plug!), I knew another change was needed. And this podcast has become a culmination of everything I’ve been interested in and working on for the past 14 years.
Positively Joy is a multicultural, multiethnic podcast that takes a mostly Christian look at the search for joy and light in all seasons of life. I’m your host, and it features wide-ranging, authentic and sometimes candid conversations with guests who speak and laugh (a lot) behind the microphone.
It’s a pandemic podcast! That means I created it in the midst of the pandemic. But it’s a creative outlet that I’ve been looking for. I love talking to people, helping them tell their stories and what they’ve learned from life.
We talk about God. Yes we do. Unapologetically. But we talk about a whole lot of things — from hair, to comic book heroes, to crafting to musicals. (Check out that Hamilton episode, ‘yo!)
As I interview my guests, I learn from them, too.
Podcasting is a multimillion dollar industry, but most of us don’t make a dime from this. It’s the stereotypical labor of life, and if we find a way to make some revenue, that’s a bonus.
Still, the fact that so many people are listening, gives me an opportunity to tell MY story: I’m a black educator married to a white man who loves my Christian God, my family, my students and podcasting — in that order. I want to share what God has done for me and my loved ones. I want to share His word, and his basic lessons of LOVE and JOY.
So, Positively Joy was born. Hope you come along for the ride. You’ll see me writing here about my guests and their amazing stories. Stay tuned.
